It was said to be one of their easiest games of the year Wednesday night when first place WTE faced off against the last place Boys and Girls. The question wasn’t if they would win, but more by how much. Some predicted another 12-0 slaughter, while others thought much, much more. After a slow first half, however, Worst Team Ever found themselves stuck in a 3-3 tie. The team managed to pull off the 7-5 win after a slightly better second half.
The close call against a weak team has many asking questions about the defensive play of WTE. Two back-to-back shaky performances by Devon Kunkel have him under pressure from the ruthless media. “My head just wasn’t in the game” Kunkel said, “I have to find my focus and get back to the basics”. The team’s leading scorer Jamie Walsh sounded off after the game. “It was an awful, awful game. We played with no urgency, and we showed everyone that we are beatable.” the understandably angry Walsh is quoted as saying. “I think our problem right now is defence. I’m not going to name any names, but there were far too many errors in the backfield. It was an overall heartless performance tonight. Utterly heartless”. These comments came as a shock to some members of the team’s defence corps. In response to these comments, scapegoat defenceman Ashley Beswick said, “I’m a little surprised by his comments, to be quite honest. Let’s just say I didn’t see him coming back to help very often”.
There were some bright spots for WTE in this game however, as they managed to build on their offensive momentum of last weeks game. Matt Fish, who scored his first two goals of the season in last week’s game, put another two in this week. Wonderwalsh and T-Bone Moran also both notched two goals each. Their large depth of offensive talent helped to get them through a shaky defensive game.
It is obvious that there is a riff that is beginning to divide the league’s best team in half. Hopefully, they will be able to pull together and play the way they have all season, especially considering they are playing the second place Just for Kicks next week. It is crucial for WTE to regain their confidence come game time next week to try and extend their lead over the rest of the pack. According to Walsh the only way WTE will be able to bounce back and win next week - “heart”. A simple answer from a simple man.
