Captain Enters New Century, Wonderwalsh Lights it Up

Mr. Ninety-Something is no more. On Wednesday night, Captain Clutch Travis DeFranco solidified his already strong legacy in the panels of Worst Team Ever history. DeFranco became only the second player in WTE history to reach the 100-goal milestone. DeFranco’s hat-trick game helped WTE dismantle the Sloppy Seconds in a gigantic 10-2 victory.

WTE.com asked DeFranco what hitting this milestone meant to him, and he responded simply: “It feels really good to finally get this one”.

DeFranco’s history setting night, however, was partially overshadowed by fellow Century Club member, “Wonderwalsh” Jamie Walsh. Walsh played quite possibly his best game of the season on Wednesday as he scored a team record 6 goals. “I can’t really explain it” Walsh said, trying to make sense of his incredible performance after the game, “it seemed like everything I shot went in. I could have been shooting beach balls at the net and they would have found their way past the goalie. I guess it was just one of those games”.

But the offence wasn’t the only part of WTE’s game on Wednesday that was on track. The team played excellently on the defensive side of the ball as well. With a strong outing from Haley Carkner and Danielle Mahoney, and another big game from Devon “The Franchise” Kunkel in goal, WTE held the opposition to just 2 goals.

The team played so well, in fact, that still goalless Ashley Beswick was even given some time on forward. She had her best chance to score of the season, when “Aquaman” Matt Fish sent her the ball all alone in front of the goalie, only to see her kick it wide of the net.  It appears at this rate, Beswick may never score this season.

WTE has been playing some of their best soccer of the season recently, and it could not have come at a better time. Without T-Bone Moran in the line-up, WTE has dominated their past 2 games with only a month left in the regular season. They will try to continue their strong play next week as the face off against the Wannabees at Farley Mowatt Public School.
